"Something to do,

Something to love,

Something to hope for."

During my ongoing delve into all things 'wellness', I'm often struck by how much we can learn from the traditional habits and lifestyles of the people of Japan.

From enjoying a diet that is rich in fresh and unprocessed ingredients, to incorporating daily physical activity into their everyday lives, Japanese health culture places value on small, simple habits that can make a big difference.

One of the perhaps lesser-known concepts of Japanese wellness is 'Ikigai.' Formed from a blend of two words: 'iki' meaning 'to live', and 'gai' meaning 'reason', it translates to 'a reason to live.'

Here at Rise&Bloom, it's a concept that is helping us to shape and transform our own lives for the better, and one that we love exploring with clients. Essentially, the four main elements are:

  • Do what you love (your passion)

  • Do what the world needs (your mission)

  • Do what you are good at (your vocation)

  • Do what you can get paid for (your profession).

Of course, everybody is different, and will have ikigai unique to themselves. And as our lives constantly ebb and flow, it is natural for ikigai to change too. For me personally, I was lucky enough to encompass all four pillars of ikigai in my job as a teacher for many years. When in the depths of chronic pain, however, my 'purpose' was often just trying to get through the day.

More recently, many changes in my life have led me to reassess my life's purpose. The principles of ikigai are just as relevant to me now, but are spread out amongst the love that I have for my family and friends; my love of learning - now focused on the latest science behind health and well-being; and my passion for Rise&Bloom - and sharing our knowledge with our lovely clients so that they have the tools to transform their own lives.

At Rise&Bloom, one of our favourite mantras is 'Do the thing that works for you.' Ultimately, ikigai is just one of many tools in the well-being toolkit. But it may be a valid starting point in your journey. Just take a moment to have a think now: 'What brings me the most joy in life?'

Start your journey to a happier and healthier life, with us, here at Rise&Bloom.
